Communications & Social Media Intern

Position Location: San Francisco
Term: 3-5 months, 2-3 days per week

VolunteerMatch's Department of Communications and Marketing seeks a Communications & Social Media Intern to manage and coordinate communications and social media activities with a dynamic team of professionals. As intern you will create and distribute digital media and content through a variety of channels to engage consumer, nonprofit and volunteer audiences. Along the you will also gain critical insight into the nonprofit sector, cause marketing, Web software as a service (SaaS), social entrepreneurism and social media.

Responsibilities include creating ideas, researching and drafting articles for our blogs, newsletters and websites; owning elements of our web presence at LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Youtube, and Flickr among other sites; and identifying like-minded blogs and bloggers and ensure they are aware of the content we produce and of VolunteerMatch as a resource.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have excellent writing and editing skills and fabulous research skills.
  • You have a high level of curiosity and willingness to ask questions.
  • You have some knowledge of social media networks and the "rules" of usage
  • You have the ability to quickly understand and adopt tools for Web communications
  • You have a desire to know or experience nonprofit organizations.

Marketing & Insights Intern

Position Location: San Francisco
Term: 3-5 months, 2-3 days per week

VolunteerMatch's Department of Communications and Marketing seeks an intern to support the organizations corporate social responsibility (CSR), marketing and thought leadership efforts. The Marketing & Insights intern will manage secondary research projects and translate it into marketing materials to support the VolunteerMatch Solutions sub-brand, which creates branded experiences to engage employees, consumers and students in volunteer activity. Research projects include benchmarking client impacts, tracking CSR industry trends and identifying best practices to share with our corporate audience. You will work closely with the members of the Communications and Marketing team to draft and distribute findings to our corporate clients, industry thought leaders and media, in line with the teams marketing strategy.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are an independent, self-motivated worker that also works well in team environments.
  • You are able to analyze complex information and boil down into digestible insights for various audiences (experience in qualitative or quantitative research encouraged).
  • You are interested in learning more about corporate social responsibility, and how volunteerism plays a part in industry trends.
  • You are an experienced writer who can write for multiple audiences, including the media, blog readers and academic.
  • You possess a can-do attitude and willingness to learn have an affinity for data-driven decisions.
  • Background in marketing, communications, research or business preferred.
  • Interest in and comfort with social media a plus!

Time Commitment:

  • 2-3 days per week in our SF office (roughly 16-24 hours per week)
  • Ability to take part in a mandatory weekly team meeting
  • College credit available if applicable; we are committed to supporting your training through regular review of work progress, portfolio development and career development strategy

Director of Engineering

Position Location: San Francisco

VolunteerMatch is looking to hire a seasoned software team leader to join us as Director of Engineering.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have 10+ years experience developing web applications
  • You've spent 5+ years leading software development teams using Lean/Agile principles
  • You possess strong communication and mentoring skills
  • You have achieved full indoctrination into/mastery of Test-Driven Development techniques
  • You have an affinity for data-driven decisions
  • You have deep knowledge about the full spectrum of web technology - leveraging web services/API's, mobile technology, web security, scalability/fault-tolerance, etcetera

What will your responsibilities be?

  • You will be serving in a Player/Manager role - managing and mentoring staff of 6+ software engineers, with participation in planning, design, coding and testing
  • You will be responsible for continuous process improvement through agile
  • You will be representing VolunteerMatch in the open-source and nonprofit technology community via conferences and working groups
  • You will assist CTO in preparation of technology strategy, roadmap, and budgets

What technologies will you use?

  • Java, using Spring and Play frameworks; Scala; Hibernate/JPA
  • HTML5, JSTL, Javascript (jQuery), CSS3
  • Cucumber, Selenium and other behavioral testing tools
  • Amazon Web Services, Rightscale

  • Mobile-optimized applications delivered using HTML5 and frameworks like Sencha and Phonegap

Frontline Engineer

Position Location: San Francisco

VolunteerMatch is looking for a bright, talented technologist to join us in the role of Frontline Application Engineer. This role will help our team manage incoming bugs, diagnosing and fixing them, or escalating as needed. This will be a position with great potential for growth within our organization, with exposure to a wide range of web technologies, and opportunities for valuable professional development.

Who are we looking for?

  • You have a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, and/or 2+ years experience supporting and/or developing web applications
  • You possess strong communication skills
  • You are a quick learner
  • You are a consummate team-player, with a strong sense of personal responsibility

What will your responsibilities be?

  • Triage incoming bugs - work with other engineers to remediate or escalate
  • Communicate with constituents, such as nonprofit administrators, volunteers and corporate clients
  • Work with Application and QA engineers to build automated regression testing tools
  • Participate in agile team processes, such as retrospectives, story workshops, pair coding and estimation

Systems Architect (Contract)

Position Location: San Francisco

VolunteerMatch is seeking a highly focused, effective technology consultant to help complete our infrastructure modernization initiative. We are moving our services to the cloud, so we are specifically looking for someone who has extensive expertise with Amazon Web Services and RightScale.

Skill Requirements

  • Production-level Amazon EC2 experience
  • Linux systems configuration and optimization
  • Automated configuration management using tools like Puppet and Chef
  • MySQL database configuration including replication, backup, recovery, and optimization; bonus points for familiarity with Percona builds/tools
  • Web Application server configuration and tuning (J2EE applications are a plus)
  • Load-testing and capacity planning
  • Fault-tolerance/Disaster recovery planning
  • Auditing and implementing security tools, policies and procedures
